Bates’ Spirit Maps extended her interest in place, enchantment and local politics by articulating neighbourhoods and sites threatened by radical urban change. Ritual walking, smoke drawings and paste-up techniques were used to gain insight into the Genius Loci; the Spirit of Place. They were selected for The Tim Olsen Drawing Prize at UNSW Art & Design, Paddington, and exhibited at Duckrabbit, Redfern in 2018.
