Scrum

Performed at Cementa festival in September 2024, this 20 minute performance took the football scrum as a model for Emergence theory used in various fields to understand how complex behaviors and structures arise from simpler interactions. Emergent properties were experienced in ‘Scrum’, where community and audience interaction shaped the final outcome. The Kandos ‘Tiaratahs’ (a community touch football team), high school footballers, and the broader community became integral parts of an enormous scrum, their dynamic interaction mirroring how unpredictable emergent phenomena can arise from collective actions. Professional dancer Susan Barling assisted with the performance choreography. Photos by Alex Wisser.
