ARTISTS
- Gus Armstrong & Maddison O’Brien collaborate on environmentally focused projects like Creek Dreaming, blending film, installation, and community engagement. Both artists are active in Kandos’s cultural ecology, with Maddie curating exhibitions and Gus producing works that reflect the tensions between land, climate, and identity.
- Gabrielle Bates is an interdisciplinary artist and arts organizer whose work in Kandos since 2022 has fostered community connections through collaborative, place-based projects that blur the boundaries between art, ritual, and local storytelling.
- Terry Burrows relocated to Kandos from the city and uses painting, photography and installation to reflect on themes of displacement and belonging. His work often engages with the town’s domestic spaces and broader global issues.
- Maddison Gibbs & Jason Wing own a warehouse studio in Kandos which they hope to transform into an art gallery. Jason is of Biripi and Cantonese heritage whose work explores bi-cultural identity, truth-telling, and environmental justice; Maddie is a proud Barkindji woman who creates multidisciplinary works that examine Aboriginal histories and spirits.
- Fleur MacDonald is a Kandos-based artist and textile designer renowned for her intricate gouache-painted wooden objects and sweet/spicy hand-printed table linens, with a debut novel set in Kandos currently in progress.
- Brett Nutting runs Ad Hoc Furniture from his workshop on Angus Avenue, crafting one-of-a-kind pieces from salvaged timber that reflect Kandos’s post-industrial charm. His practice embodies a sustainable ethos that resonates with the town’s creative reuse culture.
- Georgina Pollard is a co-founder of Cementa festival and WAYOUT Artspace in Kandos, and her abstract painting practice is deeply rooted in Kandos’s rhythms and rituals. She blends socially engaged art with a strong material sensibility, helping shape the town’s contemporary art identity.
- Leanne Wicks blends ornithology and textile art in her Kandos-based practice, knitting bird portraits that merge artist identities with native species. Her whimsical installations, such as Birds Like Us, celebrate community and environmental care through soft sculpture.
Made in Kandos acknowledges the Dabee people of the Wiradjuri Nation on whose land Kandos is built. We pay our respects to Elders Past, Present and Emerging and acknowledge that their Sovereignty has never been ceded.
