Tree Shrining was established by Gabrielle Bates in 2016 in response to threats to the urban canopy of Sydney. Made up of artists, activists and esoteric practitioners, the group works closely with communities through workshops and ritual ‘shrining’ performances to raise awareness about the vital role trees play in ecology, heritage and community health. Numerous rogue shrinings have occurred since the group’s inception, with notable appearances at Simpson Park, St Peters (2016), Perry Lane Festival, Paddington (2017), Global Rhythms Festival, Glebe (2017), and Taman Rimba Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2018).
