Spirit Town at Bankstown Arts Centre

Commissioned by Bankstown Arts Centre, ‘Spirit Town’ was a collaboration between artist Gabrielle Bates and members from the Bankstown community. It took the idea that the spirit of a place evolves through a system of complex and diverse relationships, and asked how this spirit might continue to flourish in the face of rapid urban transformation in Bankstown. Contributors came from diverse cultural backgrounds, representing voices in the community often overlooked when it comes to development: children, teens, elders and those with disabilities. The work was included in the “Grow: Places for People” event, a major arts project initiated by the Bankstown Arts Centre. This project has benefited from an Art & Design Grant courtesy of Arc @ UNSW Limited.
