Gabrielle Bates is a Sydney-based artist and writer who explores how we remember, understand and experience place. She studied and taught at Sydney College of the Arts, and is currently an MFA candidate at UNSW Art & Design. In 2007 Gabrielle was accepted for a year-long residency at Rimbun Dahan in Kuala Lumpur, followed by residencies in Penang and Manila. Her art works have been included in the Portia Geach Prize for Female Portraiture, North Sydney Art Prize, Mandorla Art Prize, Greenway Art Prize and the Wollongong Bicentennial Sculpture Award. A survey of her paintings produced in Malaysia was held at Victoria University in 2010 and she has produced 11 solo exhibitions to date.
